Gertrude Parker
I spent part of Friday visiting Gertrude Parker Elementary in Sackville, Nova Scotia. I was booked to talk about Daisy Dreamer and writing comics for grade 5 and 6 classes. I especially enjoyed all the questions and the good conversation we had.
Often, in a classroom, kids ask a question, I answer it, and then we carry on. What was great about a lot of the Gertrude Parker kids is that they would take it to the next level. Instead of just accepting my answer, they'd ask another question, or disagree with me, and then we could discuss it. It was fun.
I also really enjoyed hearing about the comics the students are creating. Keep it up!
Oh, and click here to find out more about Gertrude Parker. I think it's very cool to have a school named after her.
Summer digest
You've got to love that Chickadee summer digest. Nice little magazine, fits right in your pocket, perfect to take to the beach or the pool. One of the nice things about the summer digest is that Daisy Dreamer gets more pages -- and that means bigger artwork!
Last summer, Daisy, Ravi and Annie had a pirate adventure. The year before Daisy had to rescue her parents from the magic of a Maya temple. I just finished writing the first draft of my script for this summer's adventure, and it's in a very cool, far-off location. It's a place with a great, great name -- and it's real. I couldn't have made up a better name if I tried.
Now it's time to start thinking about stories for fall.
In the coming months
There are some really good Daisy Dreamer stories coming in the next few months. As you probably know, Daisy helps save a space mission in the January/February issue of Chickadee, and there's lots more fun stuff coming.
I just saw the artwork for the April Daisy story, and it is pretty exciting. I can't tell you more, except that Daisy turns into a creature that many, many kids have asked me about. "I'd like Daisy to turn into a ______________."
You'll have to guess and fill in the blank yourself. Then wait for April and see if you're right!
