Bob Dylan quote of the week

Don't wanna amuse nobody, don't wanna be amused.

(From "Do Right To Me Baby" on Infidels.)

I love this quote because we live in such a culture of amusement. To not want to be amused is almost incomprehensible. But Dylan is in prophet mode here. Amusement is a distraction from the serious business of saving souls.

Hey Phil,

I agree with your comment about amusement, although I tend to refer to it as "distraction". There is a fear of boredom, which we pass on to our children and try to protect them from. We are ourselves subject to this fear and so we immerse ourselves in distractions. Arguably they are distractions from the business of authentic living. Our human goal to understand our purpose and function in life is thwarted by distractions and amusements.

On a lighter note, you seem to be giving Dylan a lot of leeway with the "genius" of his lyrics.

It's like suggesting that Mick Jagger was describing one of the 4 noble truths of Buddhist philosophy when he announced, "Satisfaction, I can't get none."

I agree with the analysis of the quate too... but unlike Voltaire, I believe in the true insightful and poetic power of Dylan's beautiful lyrics. My blog discusses that in detail... check it out!
